About this edition

A handbook made to be used.

Ambitco Reader joins a faithful bilingual text to the quiet practices the ancient title suggests: reading, keeping, and carrying words ready at hand.

The edition

The English translation preserves Epictetus’s repetitions, directness, and stable philosophical vocabulary while remaining alive in modern English. Exact subsection links keep every quotation attached to its source and Greek context.

About the translator

Clint Miller grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia and studied philosophy at Yale before completing his degree at Harvard, where he received an Artist Development Fellowship. He is the author of the philosophical verse work The Book of Change (Cambridge Scholars Publishing), and his historical drama Our Diamond has been published by Baker’s Plays and Samuel French. On the independent album Ballad of a Modern Day Cowboy he performed on more than fourteen instruments; he later carried his original music to five continents while living for extended periods in China and Mexico. In the psychology department at Zhengzhou University, he conducted original EEG research and developed classroom applications for live neurofeedback; his article “Group Wisdom and Omnaural Perception” appeared in The International Journal of Bio-Science and Bio-Technology. He lives with his wife, Marika, and their son, Tennessee, and prepares high-fidelity editions through Ambitco with a particular reader in mind: many are books he hopes to place in his son’s hands.
