The Handbook of Epictetus

Handbook 2.1

Translated by Clint Miller

§ 2.1
English

Remember: what desire promises is that you get what you desire; what aversion promises is that you do not fall into what you are avoiding. Whoever fails in desire is unfortunate; whoever falls into what he avoids is miserable. So if you avoid only what is contrary to nature among the things up to you, you will never fall into anything you are avoiding. But if you try to avoid sickness or death or poverty, you will be miserable.
