Some things are up to us, and some things are not up to us. Up to us are assumption, impulse, desire, aversion – in a word, everything that is our own doing. Not up to us are the body, possessions, reputation, public office – in a word, everything that is not our own doing.

Remember: it is not the one who reviles you or hits you who humiliates you, but your judgment that these people are humiliating you. So when someone provokes you, understand that it is your own assumption that has provoked you. Try, therefore, above all, not to be swept away by the impression. Once you gain time and delay, you will find it easier to master yourself.

    English rendering

Understand that the most important part of piety toward the gods is this: to have correct assumptions about them – that they exist and govern the universe well and justly – and to have stationed yourself accordingly: to obey them, to yield to everything that happens, and to follow willingly, as things brought to completion by the best of minds. Then you will never blame the gods or accuse them of neglecting you.
