When you are about to take up any task, remind yourself what kind of task it is. If you are going out to bathe, put before your mind what happens at the baths: the people splashing, the people shoving, the people insulting, the people stealing. You will take up the task more securely if you say to yourself at once: “I want to bathe, and I want to keep my will in harmony with nature.” Do the same with every task. Then if anything gets in the way of your bathing, you will have the answer ready: “But that is not all I wanted. I also wanted to keep my will in harmony with nature – and I will not keep it if I get angry at what happens.”

  2. Epictetus, Handbook 9Read in context

    English rendering

Sickness is an obstacle to the body, but not to the will – unless the will consents. Lameness is an obstacle to the leg, but not to the will. Say this to yourself at everything that happens to you, and you will find that it is an obstacle to something else, but not to you.

  3. Epictetus, Handbook 13Read in context

If you want to make progress, be content to seem foolish and stupid about external things. Do not wish to seem knowledgeable – and if some people think you are somebody, distrust yourself. Understand: it is not easy to keep your will in harmony with nature and to hold on to externals too. If you attend to the one, you will inevitably neglect the other.

  4. Epictetus, Handbook 30Read in context

    English rendering

Our duties are generally measured by our relationships. He is a father: that means take care of him, yield to him in everything, put up with him when he berates you, when he hits you. ‘But he’s a bad father.’ Did nature assign you to a good father? No – to a father. ‘My brother is wronging me.’ Then hold your own position toward him. Do not look at what he is doing, but at what you must do to keep your will in harmony with nature. Another person will not harm you unless you consent. You will be harmed at the moment you assume you are harmed. In this way, then – from the neighbor, from the citizen, from the general – you will work out your duty, if you make a habit of studying the relationships.
